Moving scams

The "hostage load" and other tricks.

5 min read

Most movers are honest, but moving scams are common enough that the FMCSA runs a site to help people avoid them.

Red flags

  • A quote given over the phone or online without seeing your things
  • A large cash deposit before the move
  • No USDOT number, or a name that doesn't match the registration
  • No written estimate or a blank contract to sign
  • A demand for more money before they'll unload

Protect yourself

Check the mover on ProtectYourMove.gov, get everything in writing, and never sign a blank or incomplete document.
